Who is Suzy Camacho: from child beauty queen and actress to psychologist investigated for allegedly embezzling R$ 42 million from her ex-husband

Suzy Camacho, formerly known as Suse Maria Gomes Camacho Curi, has led a remarkable career in Brazilian television as an actress. Over a span of 45 years, she graced the screens in more than 20 soap operas across six different TV networks. Her journey into the limelight began at just 11 years old when she starred in “Vidas Marcadas” on TV Record in 1973, shortly after winning the Mini-Miss São Paulo beauty pageant. Suzy continued to captivate audiences in productions like “A Barba Azul”, “O Machão”, and “A Viagem” on Rede Tupi between 1974 and 1975.

One of her standout roles came in “O Espantalho” in 1977, where she portrayed the character Laurita and shared a memorable on-screen kiss with Ney, played by Carlos Alberto Riccelli. Transitioning through various soap operas such as “O Profeta”, “O Direito de Nascer”, “Aritana”, and “Como Salvar Meu Casamento” on Tupi, Suzy’s talent shone brightly. She later returned to SBT for a series of successful soap operas from 1982 to 1984, including leading roles in “A Força do Amor” and “Vida Roubada”.

While her acting career flourished, Suzy pursued a degree in psychology from FMU in 1984, a profession she later embraced. Beyond acting, she ventured into commentary and hosting on programs for SBT, Record, and Gazeta. In her most recent TV appearance on “As Aventuras de Poliana” in 2018, she portrayed herself as a psychologist.

However, Suzy Camacho’s life took a dramatic turn when she became embroiled in a legal investigation involving an alleged embezzlement of R$ 42.2 million from her ex-husband, the late businessman Farid Curi, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 85. The case, as reported by the São Paulo State Public Security Secretariat, was brought to light through a police inquiry initiated by the 4th Police District (Consolação) to probe potential offenses outlined in the Elderly Statute.

The investigation raises serious allegations against Suzy, suggesting that she took advantage of Farid Curi’s diminished cognitive abilities and fragile health to divert funds for personal enrichment, including her son from a previous relationship and other relatives.

The legal proceedings, finalized on June 6, were forwarded to the São Paulo State Public Prosecutor’s Office for review. The accusations under the Elderly Statute’s articles 102 and 107 focus on misappropriation of assets meant for the elderly and coercion of the elderly to make financial decisions.

In response to the allegations, Suzy’s defense attorney, Luiz Flávio Borges D’Urso, contends that the inquiry report unfairly targets his client, emphasizing a complex familial conflict between Farid’s children and Suzy. The defense argues that Farid’s children waged a campaign against both their father and Suzy, complicating the situation.

The investigation, spearheaded by Farid’s children, unearthed discrepancies in Suzy’s financial activities, particularly during a period when Farid’s health declined significantly. Financial records indicated a substantial increase in Suzy’s assets, surpassing her reported income, as scrutinized through tax filings, bank data, and financial intelligence reports.

The prosecution alleges that Suzy isolated Farid from his social circle, assumed control of his financial affairs, and transferred management responsibilities to her brother, facilitating unauthorized withdrawals and transfers to accounts in her name and acquaintances.

Furthermore, the inquiry revealed international financial transactions amounting to over R$ 18 million in accounts located in Monaco and Miami. Suzy and Farid married in 2013 with a complete separation of assets. Farid, a prominent figure in the Atacadão retail chain, played a pivotal role in the company’s growth before its acquisition by the Carrefour Group.

In a counterargument, Suzy’s defense team asserts that Farid’s children had their own legal troubles, including investigations for various offenses against Suzy, such as defamation, harassment, psychological abuse, witness tampering, and illegal eavesdropping. They also challenge the validity of the financial information obtained from the Financial Activities Control Council (Coaf) in the absence of proper judicial authorization.

As the legal battle unfolds, the complex web of relationships, financial intricacies, and familial tensions surrounding Suzy Camacho’s case raises broader questions about elder financial abuse, legal implications of matrimonial separations, and the challenges of untangling personal and professional interests.

In the midst of this legal maelstrom, Suzy’s journey from a beloved actress to a controversial figure underscores the intricate tapestry of human relationships, ambitions, and the delicate balance between fame and infamy. The unfolding saga of Suzy Camacho serves as a stark reminder of the complexities that underlie seemingly glamorous lives, shedding light on the vulnerabilities of wealth, power, and relationships in the public eye.
