Zegler, who is of Colombian and Polish descent, is making her West End debut in the London theater circuit as the iconic former First Lady of Argentina Eva Perón in a revival of the popular musical Evita. This is the 23-year-old’s second major stage role following her five-month stint as Juliet in the Broadway production of Romeo + Juliet. This year, she will perform in Evita for a limited 12-week run beginning on June 14, according to Deadline . “ Evita has been such an important musical to me since I was a little girl, when my dad and I would sing ‘Don’t Cry for Me Argentina’ together on my back patio,” Zegler said in a statement to Deadline . “The opportunity to bring Jamie Lloyd’s singular, visionary ideas to life onstage is an honour unlike any other. The stage has always felt like home to me, and I can’t wait to make my West End debut in such great company.” Evita first premiered in London’s West End theater in 1978. With music by English musical composer Andrew Lloyd Webber (Cats, The Phantom of the Opera) and English songwriter Tim Rice (Aladdin, The Lion King), the musical tells the true story of Perón, who was also an activist and political leader beloved by the working class in Argentina. She rose to prominence in the public eye as the second wife of Argentine president Juan Perón starting in 1946 until her death in 1952 at the age of 33 from cervical cancer. The musical was also adapted into a film in 1996 starring pop icon Madonna in the titular role. Since its premiere in 1978, it has won seven Tony Awards and been staged 12 times in large productions across eight countries including the U.S., Brazil, Mexico, and Italy. Stay connected! Notably, Zegler will be only the second Latina actress to perform in the role of Evita on the West End stage since Argentine actress Elena Roger in 2006. She will also be one of the highest-paid actresses across West End during the summer season. Almost $4 million worth of tickets for the production have already been sold, with a lot of buzz surrounding Zegler’s casting. While rehearsals are confirmed to begin in London on April 28, the musical will be performed at the London Palladium from June 14 through September 6.
