Protecting Borders ALE-RRs Efforts Against Human Trafficking

The Assembleia Legislativa de Roraima (ALE-RR) is on the front lines in tackling human trafficking and various forms of violence. Through its Program for Human Rights Defense and Citizenship, they have initiated two crucial projects: “Educate to Prevent” and “Prevention Without Borders,

” aimed at raising awareness in society and guiding people on how to respond to these crimes.

To strengthen their efforts, a victim assistance flowchart has been developed, serving as a foundation for the working group of the “

Prevention Without Borders

” project currently active in Rorainópolis, southern Roraima. The goal is to expand these actions to other border regions such as Cantá, Pacaraima, Bonfim, and Uiramutã—strategic areas due to their international proximity.

Established a year ago as part of ALE-RR’s anti-trafficking policy, this working group aims to combat human trafficking through education initiatives like “

Educate to Prevent.

” These programs have been reaching state schools for years, spreading information and prevention strategies within the school community.

According to State Deputy Soldado Sampaio: “These are crimes that demand societal action. Public institutions, especially the Assembleia Legislativa, are doing excellent work preventing these crimes at schools and now with the group in Rorainópolis.”

Human trafficking involves recruiting, transporting or harboring individuals through threats, coercion or deception for exploitation purposes—a common scenario being women trafficked for sexual exploitation or migrants forced into labor.

In Cantá municipality alone lies 96 recorded cases of human trafficking victims rescued since 2009 according to Labor Inspection Information and Statistics Panel data. In 2023, 37 workers were rescued from situations akin to slavery in the state. This prompted ALE-RR’s Human Rights Program flowchart creation aiming at standardizing victim care for dignity and humane treatment.

Socorro Santos from PDDHC emphasizes: “The intent is uniting efforts across border towns by engaging local & international institutions forming a more effective support network.”

Currently involving 19 public institutions spanning healthcare, education security & social services sectors; this initiative was designed collaboratively by ALE-RR & partners ensuring swift & efficient response protocols:
“When a victim arrives,” explained Santos: “Teams know exactly what steps to follow based on specialized needs—from engaging Child Protective Services if it’s a child victim or contacting Federal Police in trafficking cases.”
