Tornado in Puerto Varas: Injuries Rise to 13 and Senapred Maintains Red Alert in the Commune

Yesterday, the picturesque town of Puerto Varas was struck by a devastating tornado, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. According to the latest report from the National Service for Prevention and Response to Disasters (Senapred), a total of 13 individuals were injured in the calamity. These victims were promptly transported to a local healthcare facility for treatment as the community grappled with the aftermath of the natural disaster.

As the clock struck 4:12 am, Senapred revealed that 250 residences suffered damages that were currently under assessment. Simultaneously, the Superintendence of Electricity and Fuels (SEC) disclosed that approximately 11,550 clients were grappling with power outages as a result of the tornado’s impact. Among these affected individuals, both SAESA and CRELL identified 32 electro-dependent persons in the commune, fortunate to have their backup equipment functioning seamlessly during this trying time.

The repercussions of the tornado extended beyond just physical infrastructure. All educational institutions in the commune made the decision to suspend classes for the day, recognizing the need to prioritize safety amidst the chaos. Senapred underscored the gravity of the situation by maintaining a Red Alert status for Puerto Varas, a precautionary measure put in place since May 25, 2025, until deemed unnecessary.

This environmental catastrophe prompted a series of coordinated responses. The regional Yellow Alert remained in effect, signaling the continued volatility of the weather conditions. A Regional Emergency Operations Committee meeting was slated for 9:00 am in Puerto Varas to strategize and coordinate relief efforts effectively. Additionally, the day’s agenda included the comprehensive assessment of damages incurred through the application of the FIBE form, aimed at quantifying the losses experienced by residents in the affected areas.

To support those displaced or impacted by the tornado, various emergency measures were activated. The municipal gymnasium was repurposed as a shelter, ensuring that those displaced had a safe haven. Emergency roaming services were also initiated to facilitate communication within the community during these trying times. The collaborative efforts of different response teams, including 26 Army personnel supported by three trucks, firefighters from Puerto Montt and Llanquihue, 100 police officers conducting nighttime patrols, and forensic specialists, demonstrated a unified front in managing the crisis.

Amidst the chaos, the municipality of Puerto Varas initiated a compassionate drive to collect essential supplies for affected families. Collection points were set up at the fire department and the municipal gymnasium, emphasizing the communal spirit and solidarity prevailing in the face of adversity.

As Puerto Varas navigates the aftermath of this catastrophic event, the community’s resilience and unity shine through, serving as a testament to human strength in the face of natural disasters. The support and swift response from various agencies and volunteers underscore the importance of preparedness and solidarity in times of crisis. In the wake of the tornado’s destruction, Puerto Varas stands united, rebuilding and recovering, with a renewed sense of community and togetherness in the face of adversity.
