Tanque industrial que cedeu e deixou trabalhadores pendurados em SP estava desativado há sete meses

A recent incident in Cubatão, São Paulo, where a industrial tank collapsed during renovation, leaving two workers suspended on a scaffold, has raised concerns about workplace safety. The tank, which had previously stored sulfuric acid, had been inactive for seven months, as confirmed by the São Paulo Environmental Company (Cetesb). Fortunately, there were no injuries reported in the accident that occurred at the CMOC Brasil facility on the Cônego Domênico Rangoni Highway.

This industrial mishap involved employees of a contracted company responsible for the tank’s refurbishment. The Cetesb revealed that the tank had been out of operation since December 2024, shedding light on the circumstances leading to the structural failure. The company, known for its production of phosphate-based products used in fertilizer manufacturing, now faces scrutiny over the safety protocols followed during the renovation project.

Following the collapse, the affected workers were promptly taken to the CMOC medical clinic for evaluation and were later discharged. They also received psychological support to cope with the traumatic experience. Operations at the site were halted due to the structural incident, emphasizing the importance of thorough safety assessments in industrial environments.

The Workers’ Union in the Construction and Furniture Industries of Santos (Sintracomos) is actively investigating the accident and has requested a technical report from the company to determine the causes of the collapse within 30 days. Depending on the findings, Sintracomos may escalate the matter to relevant authorities for further action. Despite inquiries, the CMOC has not provided a response regarding the incident, leaving unanswered questions about accountability and preventive measures.

The company in question, CMOC Brasil Mineração, Indústria e Participações Ltda., is reported to have all necessary licenses up to date. Additionally, the tank, devoid of sulfuric acid residues due to its inactive status, posed no immediate environmental hazards. With a history dating back to 1955, the company shifted its focus to phosphate-based products in 2016, catering to various industries such as agriculture, chemicals, and food production.

Authorities in Cubatão, including the Civil Defense, have been called into question for their response to the incident. Despite social media attention and media coverage showcasing the aftermath of the tank collapse, official statements from the local government and involved parties have been scarce. The lack of transparency regarding operational details and safety protocols raises concerns about accountability in ensuring worker safety and infrastructure integrity.

As the investigation unfolds and the repercussions of this incident reverberate through the community, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of stringent safety regulations in industrial settings. The need for proactive maintenance, thorough risk assessments, and clear communication channels between stakeholders is essential to prevent such accidents in the future. The incident in Cubatão underscores the delicate balance between industrial progress and worker welfare, urging companies and regulatory bodies to prioritize safety above all else to avoid similar tragedies.
