Yolanda Saldivar, former president of Selena’s fan club and convicted murderer has been serving a life sentence and this week her parole was denied, the state’s parole board announced on Thursday, March 27, the Associated Press reported. Saldivar, who is 64 years old, shot the beloved singer in a hotel room with a .38 caliber revolver she alleges she meant to use on herself. A jury found Saldívar guilty of first-degree murder in October 1995, and she was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole. A three-person panel of the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles voted against releasing her, the Associated Press reported. Saldivar’s case will become eligible to be reviewed for parole again in 2030. “The reason provided by the panel for denial was the Nature of the Offense: The record indicates that the instant offense has elements of brutality, violence, assaultive behavior or conscious selection of victim’s vulnerability indicating a conscious disregard for the lives, safety, or property of others, such that the offender poses a continuing threat to public safety,” the Board of Pardons and Paroles said. Along with being the president of the club, Saldivar founded Selena’s fan club and was the manager of two of the singer’s clothing boutiques until she was fired in early March 1995. The Quintanilla family had fired her after accusing her of embezzling money which she denies to this including on the controversial 2024 Oxygen docuseries, Selena & Yolanda: The Secrets Between Them. Following the news of the denial of her parole, her family and husband, Chris Perez, shared a statement on their social media platforms: “While nothing can bring Selena back, this decision reaffirms that justice continues to stand for the beautiful life that was taken from us and from millions of fans around the world far too soon. Selena’s legacy is one of love, music, and inspiration. She lived with joy, gave selflessly, and continues to uplift generations with her voice and her spirit.” Stay connected! Selena’s stardom soon skyrocketed with her solo career where she from 1989 until 1995, released six albums including, Entre a Mi Mundo, Amor Prohibido, and Dreaming of You —the latter was released posthumously and was her crossover into the English-language market. Throughout her career, Selena made a name for herself going as far earning a Grammy for Best Mexican-American Album for Live at the 36th GRAMMY Awards in 1994—making history as the first Tejano artist to win in that category. Selena’s legacy and voice has endured the years, with her fans and community growing. She has also been immortalized with the iconic 1997 Gregory Nava film based on her life, Selena , starring Jennifer Lopez and just last year was honored with a posthumous National Medal of Arts , the highest award given to artists by the U.S. government, accepted by her sister on her behalf. Saldivar has been serving a life sentence at the Patrick L. O’Daniel prison unit in Gatesville, Texas.
