The San Francisco 49ers have been making moves to strengthen their defense ahead of the upcoming season. One significant acquisition is Bryce Huff, a defensive player who was traded from the Philadelphia Eagles.
“Bryce Huff brings valuable skills and experience to our team,”
said a spokesperson for the 49ers.
“We are excited to have him on board.”
Huff recently restructured his contract with the Eagles to facilitate the trade, which also involves sending a mid-round selection in the 2026 draft to Philadelphia. The deal is pending a physical examination but has been announced by both teams.
According to reports, Huff was set to earn $17 million this year with the Eagles, with $9.05 million of that amount being covered by Philadelphia and the remaining $7.95 million by the 49ers.
The addition of Bryce Huff provides San Francisco with another option at the edge rusher position alongside standout player Nick Bosa. It also reunites him with Robert Saleh, who coached him during his most productive season in 2023 while they were both with the New York Jets.
During his standout year in 2023, Huff recorded impressive stats including 10 quarterback sacks and 67 pressures in just 334 pass-rushing plays, as reported by Pro Football Focus. This performance led to a three-year, $51.1 million contract with the Eagles.
Despite a less impactful season in Philadelphia where he only managed two and a half sacks due to injury, Bryce’s previous success under Saleh’s coaching made him an attractive prospect for the 49ers.
Bryce Huff originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Jets in 2020 after playing college football at Memphis. His consistent performance over several seasons culminated in his breakout year under Saleh’s guidance.
The move comes as San Francisco sought additional pass-rushing expertise following Leonard Floyd’s departure earlier in the offseason. While they drafted Mykel Williams as an edge rusher in April’s draft, they lacked another defensive end with prior experience of recording at least five sacks in an NFL season.
In light of these changes, Bryce leaves behind memories of winning Super Bowl LIX with Philadelphia before embarking on this new chapter with San Francisco.
Over at Philadelphia, there have been significant changes within their defensive lineup during this offseason. With Brandon Graham retiring and Josh Sweat departing for Arizona in free agency, there is a need for newer players like Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt to step up alongside recent signings Azeez Ojulari and Joshua Uche.
As both teams gear up for what promises to be an exciting season ahead, fans eagerly anticipate seeing how these roster changes will impact their respective performances on game day.
