It also has a propagandist autocorrect feature. If a user types “oppa,
” a popular South Korean term for an older brother or boyfriend, the system automatically replaces it with “
comrade
” and issues a warning message. A similar scenario unfolds if someone writes “
South Korea,” which is replaced with “puppet state.
”
Expert Martyn Williams, specializing in North Korean technology at the Stimson Center, highlighted how these devices showcase smartphones being integrated into the regime’s strategy to shape the population ideologically. He warned, “
North Korea is starting to take the lead in information warfare.
” This automated censorship aims to prevent citizens from accessing foreign content, particularly from South Korea, and monitor all activities to suppress any dissent.
The goal is crystal clear: restrict access to foreign content and track all activities to clamp down on any form of opposition or dissidence – creating an Orwellian society where every move is watched without one’s knowledge. This digital resistance against oppression continues to grow.
