Recently, in Mexico’s latest gesture of solidarity with Gaza and Palestinians as a whole, the country has officially welcomed Palestinian ambassador Nadya Rasheed. On March 19, Sheinbaum accepted letters of credence for 23 ambassadors around the world, including that of Excellency Ambassador of the State of Palestine Nadya Rasheed, at the National Palace in Mexico City. With this, Rasheed has formalized her accreditation as the Ambassador of Palestine in Mexico, highlighting the allyship and cooperation between the two nations. “We condemn the aggression being experienced, and we believe that the Palestinian state must be recognized in all its fullness, just as the state of Israel is recognized. This has been Mexico’s position for many years, and it is the position we maintain,” Sheinbaum said during a press conference on Oct. 11 of last year for the Mexican government’s formal recognition of the state of Palestine, Mexico News Daily reported. The Palestinian Embassy celebrated the event through its social media channels, highlighting the significance of Mexico’s first female president accepting the credentials of a Palestinian woman. Additionally, the event demonstrated the fundamental role of women in diplomacy and fighting for a better future. Stay connected! Subscribe now and get the latest on culture, empowerment, and more. In 2009, Sheinbaum published a letter in the Mexican daily newspaper La Jornada where she writes that due to her Jewish heritage and the experiences of her grandparents who fled Nazi persecution, she calls for a ceasefire and the removal of Israeli troops from Palestinian territory: “For this reason, because of my Jewish origins, my love for Mexico, and because I feel like a citizen of the world, I share with millions the desire for justice, equality, fraternity, and peace, and therefore, I can only watch with horror the images of the Israeli bombing of Gaza… No reason justifies the murder of Palestinian civilians… Nothing, nothing, nothing, can justify the murder of a child,” Sheinbaum wrote. Through the decades, Mexico has supported human rights in Palestine with diplomatic relations dating back to 1975. Back in 2023, Mexico’s Senate passed a resolution to recognize the State of Palestine, but former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador never formally implemented it. Palestine is currently recognized by three-quarters of UN member states but not the U.S. or the majority of western European countries. In May 2024, the Mexican government joined the complaint filed against Israel before the International Court of Justice when South Africa filed a complaint alleging possible acts of genocide in the Gaza Strip.
