Baseball Mexico, Savior of the Caribbean Series – México, Salvador de Las Series del Caribe by Juan Vené February 2, 2025 “My husband is an angel.” “How lucky you are!… Mine is still alive.” Coral Gables, Florida ( VIP-WIRE ) – The Inter-American Series, won three times by the United States, was the precursor to the Caribbean Series, inaugurated in 1949 in Havana. The Caribbean Baseball Confederation had been founded by Cuba, Puerto Rico, Panama and Venezuela. The agreement for the four champions, to play two rounds in six days, with two games a day, each February, was signed by Miguel Ángel González, of Cuba; Eric Del Valle for Panama; Jorge Cordoba, of Puerto Rico; and Sebastián Artílez, of Venezuela. The blessing of Organized Baseball was given by the President of the National Association for the date, George Trautman. The first stage lasted until 1960. Cuba won seven, Puerto Rico four, Panama one and Venezuela none. In 1960, the first part ended. Fidel Castro had been installed in the Morro y Colón Palace in Havana for a year and did not allowed professional sports. They agreed that, among the three remaining countries, it was not worth continuing. The Dominican Republic played its professional baseball during the summer. It was considered that the Pacific Coast of Mexico did not have baseball of the quality required for this competition. And, in that pre-jet era, that was a very remote area. In 1970, in Caracas, they resumed action with three clubs. There was no professional baseball in Panama, so Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela participated. It was a failure. The most relevant, because it was ridiculous, was Ricardo (Rico) Carty’s attempt to organize a strike of Dominican baseball players, trying to get more money. In 1971, Mexico emerged as the fourth country in the Confederation, and the Caribbean Series was saved! Since then, Mexico has been the best place. And he was again the savior of the Series in 1992. No other country wanted it. It had been played twice in Miami, 1990 and 1991, when the Venezuelan Carlos Isava became a businessman, but lost more than a million dollars. That Miami contract was until ’92, but Isava said he couldn’t fulfill it. The Caribbean experience was going to disappear. But the savior emerged again!… Mexico took the Series to Hermosillo, and in 1993 to Mazatlán. In 1994, Venezuela took over the organization, and since then it has followed its course in the four countries. Hacía un año que Fidel Castro se había instalado en el Palacio de Morro y Colón, en La Habana, y no aceptaba el deporte profesional. Acordaron que, entre los tres países restantes no valía la pena continuar. Dominicana jugaba su beisbol profesional durante el verano. Se consideraba que la Costa del Pacífico de México no tenía beisbol de la calidad requerida por esta competencia. Y, en esa época pre-jet, aquello era una zona muy lejana. En 1970, en Caracas, reanudaron las acciones con tres clubes. No había beisbol profesional en Panamá, por lo que participaron Puerto Rico, Dominicana y Venezuela. Fue un fracaso. Lo más relevante, por ridículo, fue la intentona de Ricardo (Rico) Carty de organizar una huelga de los peloteros dominicanos, en busca de mayor dinero. En 1971 surgió México como el cuarto país en la Confederación, ¡y se salvó la Serie del Caribe!. Desde entonces, México ha sido la mejor plaza. Y fue nuevamente salvador de la Serie en 1992. Ningún otro país la quería. Se había jugado dos veces en Miami, 1990 y 1991, cuando el venezolano, Carlos Isava, se hizo empresario, pero perdió más de un millón de dólares. Ese contrato miamiense era hasta el ´92, pero Isava dijo no poder cumplir. Iba a desaparecer la experiencia caribeña. ¡Pero surgió otra vez el salvador!… México llevó la Serie a Hermosillo, y en 1993 a Mazatlán. Ya en 1994, Venezuela se hizo cargo de la organización, y desde entonces sigue su ritmo en los cuatro países.
