“I am the candidate of La Libertad Avanza in the upcoming elections.”
This statement aimed to dispel rumors circulating within the Triángulo de Hierro regarding his potential candidacy in the forthcoming legislative elections on October 26.
Espert’s relationship with Javier Milei, who supports his candidacy, stands in contrast to Milei’s sister Karina and influential presidential advisor Santiago Caputo, who do not endorse Espert. The internal rift within the mileísmo movement reflects tensions stemming from Espert’s past criticisms of La Libertad Avanza when he led his own party and collaborated with Juntos por el Cambio, a coalition that garnered votes in 2023.
“I don’t lend credence to rumors of internal discord within La Libertad Avanza,”
stated Espert firmly. He affirmed his collaboration with Karina Milei and Santiago Caputo while dismissing speculations as false. Furthermore, he expressed strong criticism towards Cristina Kirchner, labeling her as corrupt and expressing a desire to compete against her legally.
The underlying power struggle within mileísmo has been brewing for months over Espert’s potential role as the lead candidate. Karina Milei opposes having him at the helm nationally in October, while Javier Milei currently backs him as head of the Budget Commission in Congress. Despite President Milei’s support for Espert as synonymous with La Libertad Avanza, tensions persist due to past disagreements between Espert and Karina during their brief alliance under Juntos por el Cambio.
Accusations have even been hurled at Espert by Lilia Lemoine on behalf of Karina, referring to him as a “mule” during their time together in 2023. Past controversies surrounding Espert’s connections with Federico ‘Fred’ Machado have resurfaced amid campaign discussions – an association potentially damaging to public perception.
Karina empowered Sebastián Pareja as her key strategist following escalating tensions caused by Espert’s growing influence through Milei’s backing back in 2024. However, reconciliation occurred through a meeting and photo opportunity arranged by LLA officials.
While advocating for alliances to counter Kirchnerism publicly, notably absent were Espert’s active participation in strategic meetings alongside PRO representatives such as Cristian Ritondo and Diego Santilli – decisions that could impact electoral outcomes significantly.
