How to Raise Independent Kids Through Everyday Activities

[IMPORTANT: Make this 4 times longer with much more detail]

Credit: Kellogg’s By Maria Lavandera March 12, 2025 – 09:00 Dris Wallace, a dynamic Latina mom from sunny San Diego, strongly believes that empowering her daughter Danica (8) means guiding her to develop self-confidence and autonomy in her everyday life. “One of my greatest strengths as a mother is my independence, and it’s something I’ve been devoted to passing on to my child,” she says with conviction. She instills these values through an organized set of meaningful daily tasks that contribute to the family and helps her navigate her day with purpose. Dani is deeply involved in managing a daily schedule of assignments for which she is entirely responsible. “She has a list of duties on a board hanging on the fridge, and whenever she completes one, she checks them off. This simple routine helps her understand how to set mini-goals and reach an end goal,” Dris assures. Dris is particularly proud of her daughter Dani, who carries on her morning routine like a pro entirely on her own. “Every morning, Dani packs her lunch and prepares her Froot Loops snack for her school day as part of her checklist. After she is done, she puts the dishes in the dishwasher and clears the kitchen countertop,” her mom highlights. Before that task, Dani has usually picked her clothes and got dressed, cleaned up her room and made the bed, and primed her backpack with her books and folders for the day. Dris firmly believes in having an organized start each morning to set the stage for a positive day. “If you want to have a good day, let’s start with a good attitude, and eating the right breakfast. Wear what is going to make you feel good to take on the day,” she explains. Stay connected! Subscribe now and get the latest on culture, empowerment, and more. SIGN ME UP! By contributing to the family’s day-to-day activities, children learn valuable life skills, such as time management and problem-solving, while building their self-esteem. According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, “research suggests that incorporating chores into a child’s routine as early as age 3 can yield numerous benefits.” They include learning organizational skills, creating opportunities for success that enhance a sense of self-value, and establishing a solid foundation for independent functioning. In line with this perspective, Dris focuses most of her effort as a mother on organizing an age-appropriate set of tasks for her child. “It’s about teaching her that she can do anything, not just waiting for someone to do everything for her,” she shares. She has mastered balancing these tasks with fun family traditions created along the way. For example, unlike many families, who often dread Monday mornings, hers eagerly anticipates them, gathering for breakfast to plan their weekly menu. “We cook a lot—five to six times a week—and every one of us gets involved,” she says with a smile. “We sit down around the table with our bowls of cereal and create a menu for the week. Then, each day, we decide what we’ll cook as a family.” Credits: Kellogg’s No matter how small each task may seem —from making the bed to smashing an avocado for dinner or pouring their cereals into a container for school—, Dris ensures that Danica is proud of her daily achievements. Every undertaking serves as an opportunity for her to acquire the tools to foster her independence and succeed in all areas of her life for years to come.
