Gold’s not like oil or steel, it can’t run cars, it can’t heat homes, it doesn’t build bridges. Still, the surge is something the average person should take note of. Not only do rising gold prices say a lot about the global economy, they’ve also shown that the metal has become a more popular, accessible and legitimate investment vehicle. Gold has once again proven itself in 2025 as the ultimate “safe haven” in times of wars, financial crises, and global uncertainty. With a remarkable over 40% increase in value in just the past 12 months in dollars, it has set new historical records, sparking a renewed interest in this age-old investment. But in this modern era, how does one go about investing in gold? While the traditional method of purchasing physical gold to stash “under the mattress” remains popular, there are now alternative ways to invest, including online methods where investors can potentially reap similar gains without ever handling the metal directly.

Buying physical gold for long-term investment purposes continues to appeal to those who prioritize the security of being able to physically see, touch, and access their investment without intermediaries. Investors can visit specialized metal shops or certain banks offering gold, such as Ciudad or Piano, to choose the bullion or coins that best fit their budget. However, this method has its drawbacks, as experts advise considering.

A newer way to invest in gold in Argentina involves a swift, online process that allows for smaller investment amounts. This method entails depositing money into an international gold-focused investment fund, which purchases and stores the gold while also trading on the stock market. Previously, investing in gold through such funds, known as ETFs or Exchange Traded Funds, required a foreign account and currency. However, since late 2024, this option has been available in pesos through Cedears, financial instruments traded in Argentina representing foreign ETFs or stocks.

Through the acquisition of the Cedear “GLD,” investors can now participate in the world’s largest ETF designed to mirror the performance of gold. Managed by the U.S. financial firm State Street Global Advisors, the SPDR Gold Shares fund holds substantial gold reserves in highly secure vaults in London, Zurich, and New York. This investment vehicle closely tracks the physical gold price, offering exposure to a traditional asset and a safe haven during economic uncertainty.

A novel method of investing in gold involves utilizing stablecoins programmed to mirror the value of physical gold, allowing for easy buying and selling akin to Bitcoin. The most popular “crypto gold” in Argentina is Pax Gold (PAXG), purchasable with pesos or dollars on various cryptocurrency platforms. Created in 2019 by Paxos Trust Company, each PAXG is backed by physical gold stored in London, ensuring a secure and straightforward gold investment. Paxos and PAXG are regulated in the U.S. by the New York State Department of Financial Services, with regular independent audits verifying reserves match circulating amounts.

These innovative investment avenues offer flexibility, accessibility, and security, catering to a diverse range of investors based on their preferences and risk tolerance. As gold continues to thrive as a timeless investment, exploring these varied options can provide individuals with unique opportunities to participate in the enduring allure and stability of gold in their investment portfolios.
