A new species of plant has recently been unveiled to the scientific world, introducing Jacquemontia verae, discovered in the Cerrado of Quirinópolis, Goiás. This breakthrough, published in the esteemed scientific journal Phytotaxa in May, marks a significant stride in understanding Brazils biodiversity. The journey to this discovery began in June 2019 during a floristic survey in Serra da Fortaleza, rural Quirinópolis. Biologist Isa Lúcia de Morais from the State University of Goiás spearheaded the identification of this plant, which she suspected to be previously undescribed. Collaborating with taxon experts André Luiz Moreira and Mayara Pastore, the discovery of Jacquemontia verae unfolded with its unique attributes coming to light.
“The Jacquemontia verae not only enriches Brazil’s flora catalog but underscores the Cerrado’s critical conservation significance,” Isa Lúcia de Morais emphasizes. The plant has already showcased its importance by serving as a floral resource for various bee species, crucial for ecosystem pollination. However, despite its recent unveiling, Jacquemontia verae faces an imminent threat of extinction.
