Brics Summit Uniting on AI, Climate Financing, and Disease Prevention

In a world filled with uncertainty, the Brics group aims to establish common ground on three crucial topics: artificial intelligence, climate financing, and combating socially determined diseases. The leaders of the member states are set to release separate communications on these issues during their summit in Rio de Janeiro on the 6th and 7th of this month.

The decision to issue distinct statements apart from the joint declaration is strategic. By doing so, they hope to ensure that contentious matters like international conflicts or reactions to American protectionist policies do not overshadow the agreements reached in these key areas. This approach emphasizes solidarity among developing nations and support for multilateralism amid concerns raised by the new US administration under President Donald Trump.

According to diplomatic sources, these documents focusing on AI, climate finance, and health measures are nearing completion. While not legally binding, they serve as guiding principles for member countries towards a global convergence on these critical issues.

Artificial Intelligence: Empowering through Data
In the realm of artificial intelligence (AI), Brics countries are honing in on data ownership and advocating for greater control over sensitive information. The core belief driving their stance is that

“those who have data hold power.”

Data encompasses a wide range of information about individuals—ranging from personal behavior and transactions to location details, preferences, health records, industrial performance, weather patterns, among others.

Currently dominated by major tech corporations known as “big techs,

” this data can be leveraged for market analysis, algorithmic targeting, and even geopolitical influence

according to experts.

Consequently, Brics seeks increased sovereignty over member states’ data and populations to shield them from private interests.

Climate Finance: Shared Responsibilities with Differentiated Roles
Addressing climate-related issues will center around financing mechanisms emphasizing increased commitment from nations towards climate mitigation and adaptation efforts. Central to this discussion is the principle of “

common but differentiated responsibilities,” a cornerstone of Brazil’s contributions within Brics discussions that also reverberates across all communications.

This principle underscores that while all countries must tackle global environmental challenges collectively; individual responsibilities factor in emissions levels, economic status, and vulnerability to climate change impacts. Not delving deeply into energy transition specifics acknowledges that each Brics member operates with diverse energy matrices—some favoring cleaner sources like Brazil while others lean heavily on non-renewable fuels such as China and Indonesia.

Health Cooperation: Strengthening Vaccine Partnerships
Concluding with healthcare matters; the bloc underscores collaboration among Southern Hemisphere nations in combatting socially determined diseases. During a previous ministerial meeting focused on health issues; representatives endorsed international partnerships within the bloc aimed at bolstering vaccine cooperation.

As tensions rise globally due to various uncertainties—the concerted efforts by Brics member states underscore a commitment towards shared values promoting progress across vital sectors impacting society at large.
