Brazils President Lula Advocates for Free Trade Agreement with Vietnam

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva recently engaged in discussions with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Rio de Janeiro, emphasizing the need for the Mercosur bloc to initiate negotiations for a potential free trade agreement with Vietnam. The meeting took place at Forte de Copacabana, where Lula highlighted the significance of fostering economic ties between Mercosur and Asian countries like Vietnam.

“The president’s push for a treaty with Vietnam aligns with Brazil’s current role as the pro tempore president of Mercosur,”

explained an expert on international relations.

“This move reflects Brazil’s broader strategy to explore trade opportunities beyond traditional markets.”

Amid escalating global protectionism, particularly due to measures such as the widespread tariffs imposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, there is growing interest in establishing trade agreements with South American nations. Following the successful negotiations between Mercosur and the European Union, Brazil aims to pursue similar deals with Canada, Japan, Indonesia, Mexico, and India.

During the conversation with Prime Minister Chinh, President Lula underscored the urgent need for a free trade pact with Vietnam in light of increasing protectionist tendencies worldwide. A statement from the Presidency’s Social Communication Secretariat emphasized this sentiment:

“Both leaders highlighted the importance of integration and complementarity between our economies.”

In a significant development during their discussions, Brazil and Vietnam marked a milestone by finalizing their first-ever bilateral meat exports – Brazilian beef to Vietnam and Vietnamese tilapia to Brazil. This exchange underscores not only burgeoning economic cooperation but also signifies mutual trust in each other’s agricultural standards.

The joint declaration also touched upon various areas ripe for collaboration such as agriculture, defense, sports, mining, biofuels, and environmental conservation. Both leaders expressed optimism about exploring these avenues further to strengthen bilateral ties and foster sustainable development.

Looking ahead toward enhancing commercial opportunities and investments between both nations, President Chinh affirmed his participation in COP30 – the 30th UN Climate Change Conference scheduled for November 2025 in Belém (PA). Additionally, both heads of state committed to organizing business delegations promptly to facilitate expanded trade prospects.

As Brazil continues its diplomatic efforts to diversify its trading partnerships while navigating global economic challenges post-pandemic disruptions; forging closer ties with dynamic economies like Vietnam could open new avenues for growth and collaboration on multiple fronts.
