Bastidores do São João: A Journey Behind the Scenes of Junina Festivities

The arrival of June marks the beginning of a bustling period in the backstage of São João. In the vibrant region of Grande Recife, artisans and unsung professionals work tirelessly to ensure that the Junina quadrilles shine on stages and festivities across the area.

In a factory in Cabo de Santo Agostinho, Lucivan Batista, a skilled shoemaker, has been creating some of the most dazzling footwear for the Junina circuit for 16 years. His creations boast unexpected colors, abundant glitter, checks, ribbons, and bold details that have become his signature style. This year, the demand for his shoes has soared, reaching beyond Recife to cities like Maceió, Campina Grande, and Santarém. Lucivan’s workshop is now bustling with activity as they aim to produce over a thousand pairs of shoes for this São João alone.

“The focus is on Junina celebrations. With each demand, we strive to outdo ourselves so that they keep coming back year after year.”

Audécio de Souza, a 63-year-old shoemaker with two decades of experience, also plays a crucial role in enhancing the splendor of the quadrilles. Crafting custom-made pairs to ensure both comfort and beauty, Audécio emphasizes the importance of footwear that not only looks stunning but also allows dancers to move effortlessly through the night.

In addition to shoes, adorners Maílson Souza and Alison Machado dedicate their efforts to creating intricate headpieces for 40 dancing couples. Their meticulous work involves crafting hundreds of hand-decorated flags and embellishments, adding a touch of glamour to the performers’ attire.

“During this time of year, we have no respite. From Sunday to Sunday, we go to bed late and wake up early.”

For many of these artisans, São João transcends mere labor; it represents personal fulfillment. Maílson, who transitioned from a telemarketing job to pursue his passion for quadrilles, finds immense joy and satisfaction in his craft, considering it more of a pleasurable pursuit than a job.

Marcelo Melo, a costume designer with three decades of experience, remains shrouded in secrecy as he meticulously crafts 150 complete outfits for this year’s celebrations. His dedication to perfection and the element of surprise adds to the intense competition among the quadrilles, fueling his passion for the craft.

“The ultimate reward is seeing the work on the streets, the group exuding happiness, beauty, and enchanting the audience. That is truly wonderful to me.”

As these artisans pour their creativity and dedication into perfecting the intricate details of the Junina festivities, their commitment not only enriches the cultural tapestry of the region but also underscores the profound emotional connections and personal fulfillment derived from their craft. Their labor of love ensures that the São João celebrations are imbued with a magical allure that captivates both participants and spectators alike, creating lasting memories that resonate far beyond the enchanting rhythms and vibrant colors of the Junina season.
