Agustín Monzón, the grandson of the legendary boxer Carlos Monzón, is making waves not only on stage but also in the world of professional boxing. Stepping into his famous grandfather’s shoes, Agustín is determined to carve out his own path and become a prominent figure in Argentine boxing.
In a small independent play called “Fájense,
” presented every Friday at Espacio Callejón, Agustín Monzón portrays a character that mirrors the essence of his grandfather. Standing tall at six feet and three inches, with arms reaching out like Carlos Monzón’s, Agustín exudes a striking resemblance to the celebrated boxer. The play revolves around pugilistic choreography, drawing parallels between boxing and theatrical performance.
“
Agustín has this unique blend of physicality and grace on stage,
” remarked a spectator. As he greets people at the bar with his gentle demeanor, it’s evident that there’s more to him than just being Carlos Monzón’s grandson. The play captures the essence of Argentine boxing with references to iconic venues like Luna Park and themes of honor versus financial gain in the sport.
Acting as both an actor and a stunt double, Agustín has had brief encounters with renowned figures in the industry like Ricardo Darín and Florencia Peña. Despite his family legacy, Agustín is focused on honing his craft through various roles in significant projects while staying grounded in his pursuit of acting.
Reflecting on his lineage, Agustín shared insights into carrying the weight of such a famous surname: “
It was not an overnight realization; I gradually understood the significance of my last name growing up.
” Though he did not witness all of Carlos Monzón’s fights or recall every detail about him, subtle mannerisms passed down from generations serve as reminders of their shared heritage.
Transitioning from Santa Fe to Buenos Aires at 17 marked a new chapter for Agustín as he pursued acting under notable mentors while juggling odd jobs to support himself. His journey took an unexpected turn when he participated in Survivor and crossed paths with Susana Giménez on national television.
Regarding Susana Giménez’s influence on him, Agustín fondly recalled their interaction: “
She exuded warmth and kindness towards me due to her deep admiration for my grandfather.
” Their encounter left a lasting impression on him, showcasing how elements of fame intertwine with personal connections beyond mere celebrity status.
As Agustin delves deeper into both theatrical performances and stunts involving physical risk-taking, he finds himself drawn towards embracing another facet of his family legacy – professional boxing. Expressing newfound confidence in his abilities, he boldly proclaimed: “
I dare say I will be the new face of Argentine boxing.”
With aspirations to step into the ring professionally against Chino Maidana’s son later this year—a move signaling his commitment to embodying the spirit and prowess reminiscent of Carlos Monzon—Agustin is poised to make headlines beyond just theater circles. As he leaves for training at the gym after our conversation ends abruptly—an indication perhaps that destiny awaits him—we are left pondering how far this heir apparent can go in redefining what it means to be part of Argentina’s esteemed boxing lineage.
