Behind these fiery spectacles lies a hidden danger: batteries improperly disposed of in household waste. The consequences are dire, leading to a surge in garbage truck fires that have put both property and lives at risk.
Gold Coast City Council (GCCC) officials are ringing alarm bells as they grapple with a spate of seven truck fires in May alone. This alarming trend has prompted urgent action to address the root cause – lithium-ion batteries mingling with everyday trash. Superintendent Mark Halverson of the Queensland Fire Department sheds light on this growing menace, stating,
“All batteries, even seemingly spent ones like those from TV remotes, can trigger fires when compacted or crushed.”
The insidious threat posed by lithium-ion batteries extends beyond immediate combustion risks. As Halverson warns, these batteries have an unsettling tendency to reignite hours or even days after being extinguished. This poses a unique challenge for firefighting crews tasked with handling smoldering heaps of refuse post-fire.
In response to these escalating dangers, GCCC’s Water, Waste and Energy Committee chair councillor Shelley Curtis underscores the gravity of the situation. Not only do battery-triggered fires result in financial losses and operational disruptions for waste management services but more critically endanger the lives of garbage truck drivers who are frontline heroes in keeping communities clean.
“I’m a mother…and bin truck drivers are right up there with superheroes so we need to do everything to protect those men and women who deliver this service for our community,”
says Cr Curtis passionately. Highlighting the council’s focus on driver safety as paramount amidst these challenges.
Looking ahead, awareness and responsible disposal practices hold the key to averting further catastrophes caused by errant battery discards. While fines may loom as a potential deterrent for improper waste disposal habits involving batteries, education remains pivotal in driving lasting change. Cr Curtis stresses the importance of directing batteries towards designated recycling drop-off points rather than into household bins.
