He’s rolled back on legal pathways for migrants to attain citizenship, including shutting down the CBP One App and even attemped to remove birthright citizenship for children who are born in the U.S. to undocumented parents. And for weeks, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers have been spotted in major cities like New York, Phoenix, and Los Angeles, arresting people and moving forward with deportations under his authority. Along with this, he announced that he would allow ICE officers to arrest undocumented people near churches, schools, and hospitals, often considered sanctuary spaces . Most recently on February 28th, a man in Chicago, identified as Francisco Andrade-Berrera by ICE, was detained and arrested by ICE officers as he was dropping off his two children at their charter school at 8:15 in the morning. ICE alleges that the 37-year-old migrant from Mexico was a gang member with criminal convictions of “drug trafficking, gang loitering, and damage to property.” He’d also allegedly been deported from the U.S. twice before in 2005 and 2013, according to NBC Latino . Hilario Dominguez of the Chicago Teachers Union blasted the detention and spoke up against Trump: “His children watched as their daddy was put in handcuffs by agents carrying out the orders of a tyrant president,” Dominguez told Fox News . Andrade-Berrera’s arrest outside of Victoria Soto High and Jovita Idar Elementary schools is one of many in the past few weeks that have happened as part of Trump’s anti-immigration policies. In one month alone, the Trump administration claimed that they arrested about 20,000 immigrants. A significant number of those arrests, almost 41 percent of 4,422 arrests during the first two weeks of February, were without cause for criminal conviction or charges. For comparison, over the course of the year, the Biden administration arrested 113,431 immigrants in 2024, 28 percent of which included people without criminal charges or convictions, NBC News reported. You are already subscribed to our newsletter Following the incident, school officials were able to escort the two children to their respective schools and did not allow ICE officers to enter either school campus. Students also received wellness help and support during the school day. Combined, Victoria Soto High and Jovita Idar Elementary schools serve more than 1,000 students, 98 percent of whom identify as Latinx. “[When] we have parents being grabbed from our schools, we’ve got to wonder: What is Chicago Public Schools doing to protect our children?” said Alderman Byron Sigcho Lopez in a statement to WGN9 , who is Ecuadorian and has served on the Chicago City Council since 2019. Andrade-Berrera pleaded guilty in 2023 to purchasing roughly five ounces of cocaine that federal prosecutors in Chicago said he planned to sell, according to the Chicago Sun-Times . He was sentenced to three years of supervised release and credited for two weeks spent in custody.
