Football 49ers’ Fred Warner proud to be representing his Mexican roots in 2025 NFL Pro Bowl Games by Andrew Hefner February 1, 2025 Image Credit: NFL Amid a lackluster season for the San Francisco 49ers, a star again stood out against the rest. Linebacker Fred Warner, a now seven-year veteran with the 49ers, is representing San Francisco at the 2025 Pro Bowl Games in Orlando, Florida for his third straight selection to the event, and fourth in his career. The Mexican-American LB tallied 131 tackles this season, leading the 49ers’ defense, and ranking 19th amongst all NFL defenders. Four forced fumbles were added into the mix as well, for the fourth most in the league. Image Credit: NFL Warner, a former third round pick out of BYU, has played his entire career with the 49ers, and just completed his third season of a $95 million contract extension that was signed in 2021. Ahead of the 2024 season, the NFL added the ability to add other countries’ flags to the back of official game helmets to better represent a player’s culture or identity. Warner chose to don the flags of his parents’ nationalities and noted that, “It’s important to a lot of guys to be able to represent their culture. My mother is Mexican. I’ve also worn the Panamanian flag for my father who’s from Panama. It’s an important part of me. It’s something that I want everybody else to see.” (via Yahoo.com) The 28-year-old grew up in San Marcos, California, and began to play football at just the age of seven. Image Credit: NFL In a recent interview, Warner reminisced on his early days in the sport, stating “Football was a great way for my mom to healthily keep us busy and find a group of kids that had the same interests,” (via Sonoma Index-Tribune) During his high school days at Mission Hills, Warner struggled to find his footing in the sport before finally being named a starter in his junior year. He was quickly named All-San Diego Section Defensive Player of the Year, All-California First-team by USA Today, Cal-Hi Sports All-State First-team, and Avocado East League Defensive Player of the Year, before the end of high school. At that point, Warner entered the recruiting scene as a four-star recruit and committed to BYU on April 3, 2013 Warner achieved great success with the Cougars, getting substantial playing time early in his freshman year before being named a starter in year two. By senior year, he had made his mark on BYU football history, getting named a captain and tying the school record for most interceptions by an LB with seven. In total, Warner had 264 tackles, with seven interceptions, five fumble recoveries, and three forced fumbles during his time with the Cougars. Image Credit: NFL With the 70th overall pick, Warner was selected in the third round by the 49ers, a whole round down from his pre-draft projection. Ahead of the season, he signed a four year/$3.97 million contract. He quickly was named a starter by head coach Kyle Shanahan, who has been with the team throughout Warner’s career. By 2021, Warner had become a star. He had already amassed hundreds of tackles in his young career, and with his contract soon expiring the 49ers gave him his record-breaking $95 million contract, which he is still on today. Warner is not showing any signs of slowing and continues to be an amazing representative of the Latino community in the NFL.
