Football 2025 NFC and AFC Championship Preview by Andrew Hefner January 25, 2025 Image Credit: Kevin Sabitus/Getty Images NEW YORK, NY — NFL fans watching from across the globe this Sunday are in for a treat as the two NFC finalists, Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders face off, followed by the two AFC finalists clashing with the Buffalo Bills vs. Kansas City Chiefs. Image Credit: NFL That’s right — it’s Conference Championship Sunday… and it’s going to be a fun one. NFC Championship: 3:00PM ET/12:00PM PT on FOX Two NFC East division rivals will meet up to face each other in the NFC championship, with the Eagles, looking to exact revenge after missing out on a ring just two years ago, and the young and fierce Commanders, trying to create the next dynasty. Image Credit: NFL No. 6 Washington Commanders (12-5) The Commanders have undergone many changes in recent years — from the renaming of their team and stadium, new ownership, and a new franchise QB, the team is almost unrecognizable from just a few years ago. With not many expectations going into 2024/2025, they have become a force to be reckoned with in the NFC. Led by sixth-year WR Terry McLaurin, and rookie phenom QB Jayden Daniels, Washington will be looking to finish the underdog story of a lifetime against the Eagles. Players to Watch on Commanders Side Jayden Daniels, QB – Daniels, a former Heisman winner with LSU and second overall pick in this past year’s draft, has quickly become one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. His unique skill set from his impressive years in college has allowed him to utilize the Commanders’ limited offensive weapons astonishingly. Daniels is seemingly becoming the next franchise QB in Washington, but a rookie Super Bowl appearance could put his name on the map for a long time — a milestone never achieved by a rookie QB before in NFL history. Image Credit: NFL Terry McLaurin, WR – In his fifth straight 1,000 yard season, McLaurin has been a force in the NFC East since he arrived in the pros. With the newfound talent of Daniels, he has put up a career-high 13 touchdowns and helped lead his team into the playoffs. He will most likely be the biggest offensive weapon for the Commanders so utilizing him properly could lead them to victory. No. 2 Philadelphia Eagles (14-3) The Eagles have one of the most complete rosters in the NFL, and after missing out on that coveted championship at the hands of the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII, the Birds will be looking to get revenge. Their new additions of Saquon Barkley, along with the tested receiving core, have led them to an impressive 14-3 record, but they still have plenty of work to do. The Commanders will be a test for them, as one of their three losses came by Washington earlier this season. Image Credit: NFL Players to Watch on Eagles Side Saquon Barkley, RB – After spending the first years of his career with the New York Giants, Barkley made the surprising move of signing with their division-rival Eagles. In the end, however, he made the correct move. Barkley would come within 100 yards of the all-time single-season rushing record, still held by Eric Dickerson, while creating some of the most impressive and memorable highlights of the 2024 season. Barkley could be that force to be reckoned with against an occasionally sloppy Commanders defense. CJ Gardner-Johnson, CB – Gardner-Johson has been the star of the show on the Eagles secondary, tallying nine interceptions this season, while being a consistent lockdown CB. With a young QB on the other side of the ball, Gardner-Johnson should be looking to take advantage of the inexperienced Daniels. AFC Championship — 6:30PM ET/3:30PM PT on CBS The AFC championship will feature a battle of two titans, the seemingly invincible Chiefs, and the repeatedly unlucky Bills. Image Credit: NFL No. 2 Buffalo Bills (13-4) At the start of this season, it seemed as if the Bills would be in trouble. Coming off of the loss of star receiver Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans, while questioning how much longer star QB Josh Allen would be able to keep it up, there wasn’t much hope within the Bills Mafia. However, a flurry of young talent (along with the continued success of Allen) would allow Buffalo to comfortably march their way through their division and into the playoffs. Their last Super Bowl appearance came during the 1994 season, and their passionate fanbase had grown restless. With a potential Hall of Fame QB in the prime of his career, this has to be the year that Buffalo finally advances. Players to Watch on Bills Side Josh Allen, QB – Allen is one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks the NFL has witnessed in a long time. His effortless passing game combined with his immense knowledge of the game, allows him to seemingly create big plays out of thin air. With 28 touchdowns through the air and another 16 on the ground to add on, the MVP talent has beaten the odds and led his young team to victory. Image Credit: NFL James Cook, RB – While Allen was a force to be reckoned with on the ground as well, most of the run-game support would be courtesy of lifetime Bills RB, Cook. Cook would have his breakout season in 2023, rushing for his first 1,000 yard season, but only put two rushing touchdowns up on the board. In 2024, with the departure of other key offensive assets, Cook was put to the test, and succeeded, rushing for another 1k yards, while contributing 16 touchdowns on the ground, and 2 in the air. With Allen always being a rushing threat as well, Cook and Allen can cause problems for the Chiefs’ defense on Sunday. Khalil Shakir, WR – Shakir, in his third season with the Bills, has emerged as Allen’s new favorite receiving target. The departure of the star Diggs certainly left a gaping hole in the WR-room, but Shakir was able to step up and fill it, putting up a career-high 821 yards this season, on a team-high 100 targets. Dalton Kincaid/Dawson Knox, TEs – The Bills represent a unique opportunity at the TE position, with two top talents, each with their own unique skill sets. During the 2023 season, Kincaid stepped in as a rookie while Knox was recovering from injury, and became an important asset to the Bills offense. With Knox’s return the duo has split time, creating one of the most lethal TE pairings in the league. Image Credit: NFL No. 1 Kansas City Chiefs (15-2) Just a few years ago, the Chiefs were viewed as the heroes that America needed. Patrick Mahomes and his crew would be the ones to finally end Tom Brady’s reign at the top and usher in the new era of the NFL. Unfortunately for many fans, the Chiefs ended up doing a bit more than just that. Kansas City has had one of the most dominant stretches in NFL history, last year winning back-to-back Super Bowls, while simultaneously advancing to their fourth one in just five years. Although the Chiefs’ assets and talent seem to be continuously dwindling, Mahomes and Travis Kelce have been able to do the impossible once again. Players to Watch on Chiefs Side Patrick Mahomes, QB – Mahomes has become the face of football in the last few seasons, and certainly for good reason. His dominance of the sport has gained him 3 Super Bowls in just 4 seasons and has firmly cemented himself in the conversation for top QBs of all time. His evolving playstyle and resourceful nature have allowed him to keep winning, despite not having many big names to help him out. Image Credit: NFL Travis Kelce, TE – Kelce has been Mahomes’ right-hand man throughout his career, just as the great Rob Gronkowski was to Brady. Their friendship and camaraderie have allowed them to march their way to three Super Bowl wins and countless records. Kelce will be the Chiefs’ main receiving threat on Sunday, so the Bills should be looking to keep him detained. Chris Jones, DT – Jones is widely regarded as one of the most fierce defensive threats in football. His strength and agility have allowed him to become feared by QBs across the league and have helped force some of the most important sacks in the Chiefs’ history. His matchup against Allen will prove to be a challenge, but if Jones can keep the Bills’ QB under pressure, the game is sure to go in the Chiefs’ favor. Latino Running Back Representation Isiah Pacheco, RB, Chiefs – Pacheco has struggled with injuries this year, missing a majority of the season with a detrimental leg injury. The Puerto Rican-American RB has previously been a postseason hero for the Chiefs, contributing in back-to-back SB runs, and now that he is back from injury, he will be looking to do the same this year. Image Credit: NFL/Yahoo Sports Chris Rodriguez Jr., RB, Commanders – Rodriguez Jr, the second-year Puerto Rican-American RB out of Kentucky, has been a reliable backup rushing threat for the past two seasons. He has added to an already strong RB room in Washington and provides excellent depth on the offensive side of the ball.
